Your hard drive is where all of the data, pictures, music, and other files, including Windows or another operating system is stored. Is your hard drive making strange clunking, grinding or whirring sounds that it never made before? If yes, it’s not a question of ‘if’ your hard drive is going to crash — the question really is ‘when’, because every hard drive will eventually fail.

When Hard Disk Drives Fail!

Whether you hear strange noises from your computer or your computer is crashing intermittently, you may suspect you have a damaged hard drive. Average hard drive life cycles are generally estimated at three to five years, and some drives last 10 years or more. Those figures aren’t very comforting if your drive fails after six months and you don’t have a data backup.

Laptop computer users need to be especially careful. Laptop hard drives have a very high rate of failure, due to the mobility of the laptops; hard drives do not like to be bumped or dropped around. A dropped laptop is the most common reason hard drives are damaged and come in for data recovery. “My laptop was dropped a few feet on the floor and now it is clicking”, is a recognition we hear every week. When drive is dropped while running, the heads crash into the platters and get damaged resulting in a clicking sound. To recover this drive properly without risking further damage to the platters, a clean room head replacement must be performed.

Most Common Hard Drive Failure Symptoms:

So why do hard drives fail, often more frequently than they should? How can we tell when they are experiencing trouble? The answers are pretty straightforward; knowing them can save you hours of PC misery.

  • The drive is running extremely slowly
  • Frequent but irregular crashes, especially while booting up the OS
  • Frequent and cryptic error messages while performing typical activities like moving files
  • Disappearing files and folders
  • Really long wait times to access folders and files
  • Clicking, whirring, and other physical noise
  • The hard drive isn’t recognized in the BIOS
  • S.M.A.R.T. warns you of impending hard drive failure

Despite talk about data loss due to viruses and software glitches, hardware failure remains the most likely cause of data failure. According to data recovery firm Ontrack, hardware or system failure is the most common cause of data loss, at 56%. However, human error is next, at 26%, with software/program corruption (9%) way down the list. That’s a one-in-four chance the file you cannot find is gone because you saved over it, deleted it, or otherwise damaged it. If your hard drive is actually failing, you may have seen warning signs, and if not, there are ways to check the drive for problems.

If you previously didn’t hear a peep from your hard drive, but now you do… Check it. If it seems much louder than usual or makes occasional clicks or high-pitched whining or grinding sounds, that may be a sign of failing drive, so be prepared to backup your data and replace the drive.

Cloning the Hard Drive may be the best solution!

Cloning copies the complete contents of one drive—the files, the partition tables and the master boot record—to another: a simple, direct duplicate.

Accidental data deletion. Now what?

We’re all familiar with that sinking feeling. It follows the realization that you’ve just deleted something important, such as an Excel spreadsheet containing a year’s worth of important customer data. As soon as you realize something’s gone, the first thing to do is stop. Stop working, stop saving, stop downloading, stop installing. Stop everything. The last thing you want to do is overwrite “deleted” data, which is probably not deleted at all, with something newer. Also, make sure you don’t let any backups or hard drive maintenance utilities run because they can also overwrite or corrupt valuable sources of data recovery.

Neon Computers offer quick data recovery service. We can back up your Hard Drive and transfer all Documents/Pictures/Audio/Video files on to a DVD media, Flash Drive, External HDD or another computer.

Traditional HDDs (hard disk drives) are mechanical devices composed of stacked platters that spin very quickly (7,200rpm is common). Read/write heads, connected to a moving arm, hover above the platters separated by a cushion of air.

Our workshop tools allow very successful data recovery on portable media digital storage such as; MemoryStick, CompactFlash, MultiMediaCard, miniSD, xD-Picture, SmartMedia and SD cards.

If you own a computer, problems will happen with it eventually. You press the Power button and . . . nothing. You drop it, if it is a laptop, and the screen breaks. A power surge takes out one critical component, rendering the computer useless. There isn’t much you can do to stave off wear and tear, accidents, and nature, but as long as the hard drive is intact, you can still get your data off the machine.
