Does Apple Computers Get Viruses

Mac computers have long enjoyed a bulletproof reputation but it can only be a matter of time until your Macintosh got hit.

Even if you have never had a virus problem before, Mac security software can give you peace of mind. We recommend Intego VirusBarrier, Norton AntiVirus for Mac and BitDefender Antivirus for Mac. These applications offer the best security for individual Apple Mac computers and mixed networks.

History of Macintosh Viruses:

There’s no doubt that the Windows malware problem is much larger than the Mac threat – but that doesn’t mean that the danger of malware infection on Mac OS X is non-existent. Here are some recent issues where Apple Macintosh computers got infected:

  • 2012 – Flashback trojan, is a trojan horse affecting Java vulnerability of personal computer systems running Mac OS X
  • 2011 – Mac Defender (also known as Mac Protector, Mac Security, Mac Guard, and Mac Shield) is an internet rogue security program encountered by opening an image found on a search engines.
  • 2010 – HellRTS, backdoor Trojan horse that allowed hackers to gain remote control over your iMac or MacBook.
  • 2009 – MacCinema, malicious HDTV program, infected with RSPlug Trojan horse.
  • 2008 – MacSweeper planted poisoned adverts on TV-related websites.
  • 2008 – Imunizator – another example of scareware for the Apple Mac, which claimed to find privacy issues on the user’s precious computer.
  • 2007 – The BadBunny worm dropped Ruby script viruses on Mac OS X systems

How To Remove MAC Defender & Its Variants

MAC Defender (and its variants, including Mac Protector) is a program that masquerades as an antivirus application. Instead, it itself is the infection, and the goal of the scammer is to get you to “buy” MAC Defender to rid your system of the infection, forking over sensitive financial details in the process. There are other variants on MAC Defender in the wild, all of which do essentially the same thing. Note that this is really no different than what Windows users have had to deal with for years-fake protection products that are designed to con you out of your money with false alarms.

How To Close A Frozen Application:

Did an application get hung up or is it just taking too long to finish a task? Mac OS X provides an easy way to force applications to quit. Hold down CONTROL-OPTION and, on the Dock, click the icon of the application you want to quit. This will bring up a small pop-up menu. Select Force Quit from the menu to end the application.
